St. Mary The Virgin: Bedfont Green by curry15 on Flickr.

On my way to Heathrow a couple of years ago, I passed this church and couldn’t believe my eyes, not what I expected to see in Feltham, I later saw a photo on Maxwell Hamilton’s photostream which reminded me to go and get a closer look. I finally made the effort to visit it.
The Two Peacocks of Bedfont
Bedfont’s place-name comes from Bede-funt and means a spring or fountain bubbling out of a hollow (or bed). The centre of the village is Bedfont Green, crossed by the Staines Road, with St. Mary the Virgin Church on its north side. The church is the oldest in the Borough with a Norman chancel arch and doorway and wall paintings dating from c.1250. The church of St. Mary The Virgin has parts dating to 1130, although the church has been subsequently extended and restored. The advowson of the church was granted to the priory of the Holy Trinity, Hounslow. A vicarage was endowed by the Bishop of London in 1316, and the advowson was granted to the Bishop after the Dissolution.
Grade II listed. Norman, with original chancel, retaining chancel arch and 1 window, and
part of original nave retaining good South doorway. Wall paintings of circa 1300 to North of chancel arch. Mediaeval King-post roofs to nave and chancel. Pleasant series of tablets of C18 and early C19 date, and brass to William Page and Isabell his mother 1629-32. Gravestones and table tombs of C18 and later date in churchyard and pair of yew trees, formerly clipped and originally bearing initials and the date of 1704.
The church was enlarged in the early C19 on the North side and again circa 1865 when the nave was lengthened and a new tower and South porch were built. British Listed Buildings

Pevsner stated that ‘There’s nothing like Roehampton anywhere in London to get an impression of the aristocratic Georgian country villa.’ This beautiful Queen Anne mansion was part of Queen Mary’s Hospital for many years and has now been restored and converted to luxury apartments.
Grade I listed. 1710-12 by Thomas Archer. Alterations to the main house and addition of advanced north and south wings 1910-13 by Sir E Lutyens: a continuation of the Archer style and to a plan close to Archer’s original intentions.
